Ellenbrook yards

Small, hot, walled-in courtyards

A lot of Ellenbrook and Aveley homes sit on smaller lots, and what is left over is a courtyard between the house and the fence rather than a back yard. Those spaces are hard on natural lawn: walls on two or three sides, reflected heat off the rendering, patchy sun through the day, and not enough room for a mower to be worth the trouble.

That makes them ideal for turf and slightly more demanding to lay well. A small area is nearly all edges, so almost every metre is a cut, a join or a fixing against a wall or paving. That is why a courtyard costs more per square metre than an open yard even though the total is far lower.

Heat is the other consideration. A walled courtyard holds warmth, so the cooler ranges are worth the extra per metre here in a way they are not in an open yard with a breeze through it.

Ranges

Ranges that suit a small courtyard

In a small, hot, walled space the yarn matters more than the pile height, and the total cost stays low even on a premium range because the area is small.

How it works

From free measure to finished lawn

1. Free measure in Ellenbrook

We come to you, measure the area, check the levels and the drainage, and look at what has to come out first.

2. Fixed written quote

One price for the whole job. It holds unless you change the scope.

3. Excavation and base

The old lawn or paving comes out and goes with us, then the base is built and compacted. That is most of the time on site.

4. Turf, infill and clean-up

Laid, joined, pegged and infilled, brushed up and the site left clean. Around 100 square metres a day.

We also cover Aveley, The Vines, Henley Brook, Upper Swan, West Swan, Brabham, Dayton and the Swan Valley.

Other suburb guides: Fremantle, Joondalup, Canning Vale, Brabham. Everywhere else is on the locations page.

Questions

Asked most often in Ellenbrook

Is a small courtyard worth doing?

Usually more worth it than a big yard. The total cost is low because the area is small, and a courtyard is the space natural lawn fails in first, so the difference is obvious straight away.

Why does a small area cost more per square metre?

Because a small area is almost all edges. Cuts, joins and fixings against walls and paving take the time, and the set-up is the same whether we lay fifteen metres or a hundred and fifty.

Can you lay it over existing paving or concrete?

Yes. Turf goes over a sound hard surface, which saves the excavation entirely. If the surface holds water we build falls or a drainage layer in first so it does not pool under the turf.

Does a walled courtyard get too hot?

It gets warmer than an open yard because the walls hold heat. A cool-yarn range, the right infill and a quick hose on a bad day all bring it down, and it still runs cooler than the paving next to it.
