Completed playground project
Murdoch, Western Australia
A Level 5 rooftop playspace with a natural timber walking bridge, raised garden beds, a timber-framed sandpit and artificial grass.

The project
The outdoor play area at Nurture Early Learning Murdoch is five storeys up, on the roof. Jay’s Playground Solutions built the whole playspace to work at that height — load, drainage, sun exposure and the wind that comes across an open roof all had to be resolved before a single play element went in.
A natural timber walking bridge on a gentle incline gives the children a change of level to negotiate and adds flow to the rooftop landscape. Raised hardwood garden beds turn one edge into a growing area the children plant and water themselves, and a timber-framed sandpit beside the greenery gives them open-ended sensory play. Artificial grass covers the main surface, so the roof stays green and drains straight through.
Every material was chosen for a rooftop: light enough for the structure, stable in wind, durable under full sun, and low-tox and child-safe throughout. The result is a full outdoor learning environment in a footprint most centres would write off as unusable.
