The systems

Four soft fall systems, and what each one is for

Soft fall is not one product. Which system you want comes down to the fall height of the equipment above it, how much traffic the area takes, and whether you want a seamless surface or a loose one. These are the four we install most, and we are happy to tell you when the cheaper option is the right one. If the equipment is still to be decided, start with playground equipment and we will spec the surface around it.

EPDM rubber softfall

The premium wet pour system. Coloured EPDM granules bound on site into a seamless, permeable surface that holds its colour under Perth sun.

EPDM softfall →

SBR rubber softfall

The base layer under EPDM, or a cost-effective surface on its own where colour is not the point. Same impact absorption, lower cost per square metre.

SBR softfall →

Rubber mulch

A loose-fill surface that looks like bark but does not rot, blow away or need topping up every season. Good under swings and large climbing frames.

Rubber mulch →

Softfall pads

Interlocking rubber tiles you can lay over an existing hard surface. The fastest option, and the easiest to lift and relay later.

Choosing

Wet pour or loose fill?

Wet pour rubber is mixed and laid on site, so it cures into one continuous surface with no joins, no edges to lift and nothing for a pram or a wheelchair to catch on. It drains straight through, it hoses clean, and it is the surface almost every childcare centre ends up choosing.

Loose fill costs less up front and goes down faster. The trade-off is maintenance: it migrates away from the busy spots, so it needs raking back and topping up to keep the depth that makes it safe. Rubber mulch does this far less than bark or sand, which is why we use it where a loose surface is genuinely wanted.

If you are not sure which you need, send us the equipment details and the area. The fall height decides most of it.

How it works

From site visit to cured surface

1. Site visit and measure

We measure the area, check the fall height of the equipment going over it, and look at the base, the falls and where the water needs to go.

2. Base preparation

Soft fall is only as good as what is under it. We excavate, lay and compact the base, and set the edges and drainage before any rubber goes down.

3. Laying and curing

SBR base layer first, then the EPDM wear layer trowelled to the design. The surface needs time to cure before it takes traffic, and we tell you exactly how long.

4. Handover and maintenance

We hand over a cured, cleaned surface. Later on we repair damage, patch worn zones and re-top loose fill without replacing the whole area.

Questions

Soft fall rubber questions we get asked

How thick does soft fall rubber need to be?

It depends on the fall height of the equipment above it, not on the area. A low toddler frame needs far less depth than a tall climbing tower. Send us the equipment details and we will tell you the depth you need before we quote.

What is the difference between EPDM and SBR?

SBR is recycled black rubber and is normally the base layer. EPDM is a coloured synthetic granule used for the wear layer you actually see. Most jobs use both: SBR underneath for depth, EPDM on top for colour and durability.

Can you lay rubber over concrete or pavers?

Yes. Wet pour bonds directly to a sound hard surface, and softfall pads are designed to sit over one. If the base is cracked or moving we will say so, because the rubber will follow whatever is underneath it.

How long before children can use it?

Wet pour rubber needs to cure before it takes traffic, and the time moves with the weather. We give you a firm date at handover rather than a guess, and we would rather you waited a day longer than marked the surface.

Do you supply rubber without installing it?

Yes. You can buy EPDM, SBR, rubber mulch, softfall pads and binder from our rubber shop and lay it yourself or use your own contractor. Trade pricing is available on a trade account.

How much does soft fall rubber cost per square metre?

The rate moves with the system, the depth and the size of the area, and small areas cost more per square metre than large ones because the set-up is the same either way. Send us the area and the equipment and you will get a written rate, not a range.
