  • Use a crushed limestone or cracker dust sub-base compacted to a minimum 100mm depth
  • Avoid organic sub-base materials (bark, soil, sand without limestone) these decompose, creating movement in the surface and organic material that bacteria can colonise
  • Grade the sub-base with a 1–2% fall away from the house and toward drainage points
  • For large dogs or heavy use areas, increase compaction depth to 150mm for maximum stability

For dogs that are diggers, bury the edging profile and the first 50mm of the turf edge slightly below grade making it harder for a dog to get purchase on the edge.

No-dig border tip: If you have a persistent edge-chewer, a concrete mow strip around the perimeter of the artificial grass creates a fixed, inedible barrier. This is the most effective physical deterrent for dogs that target turf edges.
